Editing videos is no longer an activity reserved for professionals. Multiple software applications allow creating your own clips without much effort and AVS Video Editor is one of them. This tool combines usability with rather powerful features. If you have ever used basic video editing software, like Windows Movie Maker, you’ll find that working with this tool isn’t very different. However, you must be aware that it certainly allows doing much more. Fortunately, while you use the application, you receive tips for every step very much like in a tutorial. Furthermore, there’s excellent accompanying documentation to consult.

This program’s interface is similar to those of other video editors. Luckily, it can be adapted to your expertise or convenience. Just to mention an example, many inexperienced users may feel more comfortable working with a storyboard than a timeline. To start a project, you should first create a media library. It’s good to know that you can not only import standard media files but also capture video from a camera or the screen. Moreover, you can record a voiced narration as well.

The tool allows using various separate tracks to place main and overlay video, audio, recorded voice, texts, and transitions. Each of the imported clips can be edited separately by trimming, splitting, and adding effects. You can also correct imperfections as the program lets you stabilize shaking video shots and apply color correction.

As to format support, AVS Video Editor can export in practically every format. It’s good news that you don’t need to know a lot about this because there are multiple output formats that you can choose according to the intended use. In this regard, you can not only save the resulting videos as standard files but also upload them to a video-sharing site and even burn them to disc. By the way, you can create your own DVD menus should you wish to.

All in all, AVS Video Editor seems appropriate for home users as well as some professional tasks. Although I really enjoyed using this program, I regret saying that you shouldn´t expect finding in this tool all the features available from the leaders in this field, such as Adobe Premiere, Sony Vegas, and Final Cut. In this respect, AVS Video Editor has various limitations. For instance, it doesn’t allow separating the audio and video tracks in a source clip. Moreover, you´ll soon find out that it’s not possible to add another overlay layer. Finally, you should also know that when I rendered my project, one of the transition effects didn´t work as I hoped.
